Our experience in Monfrague and FIO.

Weeks ago, we visited the National Park of Monfragüe. We arrived to Villarreal De San Carlos, in the centre of Monfragüe, about 10:30 am. After a stop and visit the village, where we could taste handcrafted products and “lomo ibérico”, we began the guided tour with our guide Jaime. First of all, we started in “Peñafalcón” or “Salto Del Gitano”, where we could see Griffon Vultures, Egyptian Vultures and some Black Vultures. In this viewpoint Jaime explained us interesting things about these birds. In my opinion I can say that this has been a great experience, we have used telescopes, binoculars, we have seen birds, which are only in a small region in the world and although birdwatching can be tedious because we need to have a lot of patient, for me it was a rewarding feeling.

Later we stopped in different viewpoints as “La Tajadilla”, “La Portilla Del Tiétar” or “Saltos De Torrejón”, where we ate at the picnic area. There we could see different types of landscapes and we saw again Griffon vultures and cormorants. In one of these viewpoints we tried to see the Black Stork and the Eagle Owl but we had not opportunity. After, we saw how the ravens frightened away the Griffon Vultures. Also during this route we saw a hind. Finally we had to come back soon due to bad weather and the wind, in such a way that we couldn’t see many birds. In my opinion I like the excursion very much because for me the nature is very important and I would like to do another excursion.

Now we are going to talk about FIO, is an International Birdwatching Fair.
It is an annual event that take place two weekends ago, since 26 to 28 of February at the village of Villarreal de San Carlos in the National Park of Monfragüe.
In this fair was a lot of tourist from different parts of Spain and from another countries, and so many kinds of expositors who offers package tour, instruments for birdwatching like digital cameras, telescope and binoculars, and also administrations developing bird conservation projects.
On Saturday, we were in the stand of University of Extremadura, where we can promote the differents degrees at the Faculty of Business and Tourism.
In my opinion that experience was positive and I learnt to stay face to face with the tourist.

After lunch, the climate wasn’t very well because of the “perfect storm”, and about 17:00, some pavilions blow down and because of it, was necessary to evacuate and close the fair. Fortunately we were safe and nothing happen.
I think that the experience was great, and I can learn how to attend public. I am very surprised about the interest in birdwatching tourism, people was very involved in the protection of nature.
I hope to repeat the experience in this fair or in another. I feel like a professional of tourism and I like it.
